Why Your Guys Ignore Your Safety Meetings (And How to Fix It)
If your safety training is just reading a sheet of paper in a monotone voice, you are wasting money.
We've all been there. It's 7:00 AM. It's cold. The foreman is standing in front of the truck reading a "Toolbox Talk" about proper lifting techniques for the 100th time. The crew is staring at their boots, thinking about coffee.
This is not training. This is box-ticking. And it doesn't work.
Respect Their Intelligence
Your workers aren't stupid. They know how to lift a box. When you treat them like children, they tune you out.
Better Approach: Instead of lecturing, ask questions. "Hey, Dave, that valve we're pulling today is awkward. How are we gonna get it out without blowing a disc?" Now you have a conversation. Now they are thinking. That is safety training.
"Boots-to-Boardroom"
This is my specialty. I speak two languages: "Executive" and "Field."
- To the Boardroom: I talk about risk exposure, liability, ROI, and safety culture metrics.
- To the Field: I talk about watching your buddy's back, getting the job done right the first time, and not getting hurt so you can play hockey on the weekend.
You can't use the same script for both groups. If you try, you lose everyone.
Make It Real
Stop using generic templates from the internet. If you're a roofing crew, don't talk about forklift safety unless you have a forklift. Customize your training to the actual hazards of the day.
