Manufacturing Safety: Complacency is the Enemy

In a shop environment, routine is good for production but dangerous for safety. When guys get too comfortable, they stop respecting the machine.

I've walked through hundreds of shops—from electronics recycling to heavy steel fabrication. The scariest thing I see isn't usually a broken guard; it's a worker leaning on a running machine looking bored.

Complacency kills. When you do the same task 500 times a day, your brain goes on autopilot. That’s when fingers get lost.

Lockout / Tagout: No Shortcuts

If I had a nickel for every time I heard "I was just clearing a jam, it takes too long to lock it out," I'd be retired.

LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) isn't a suggestion. It’s life or death. I train crews specifically on this: The time it takes to lock out is cheaper than the downtime of an investigation, not to mention the guilt of hurting a buddy.

The "Guard" Problem

Guarding is tricky. It needs to protect the worker but not make the job impossible. I see a lot of "homemade" guards that actually create new pinch points. Or guards that have been removed "just for a minute" and never put back.

I can help you audit your guarding. We look for reach distances, pinch points, and bypass issues. We fix it before OHS issues an order.
